Michael Carrick appointed Manchester United head coach

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as head coach of the men’s first team, with the former midfielder signing a deal that runs until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Carrick returns to Old Trafford following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim , who was sacked last Monday after 14 months in charge.

The 44-year-old will take immediate control of the first team, starting with Saturday’s Manchester derby against City .

Carrick featured in 464 matches for United, winning five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, the Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Since retiring in 2018, he has been part of United’s coaching staff, working under José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Carrick also briefly stepped in as caretaker manager after Solskjær’s exit in 2021, earning praise for his leadership during a transitional period. He later spent two-and-a-half years in charge at Middlesbrough from October 2022, where achieved the play-offs in the 2022/23 season.

United have confirmed his coaching team will include Steve Holland , Jonathan Woodgate , Travis Binnion , Jonny Evans and Craig Mawson .

Darren Fletcher, who oversaw recent matches against Burnley and Brighton as caretaker, was offered a role on Carrick’s staff but opted to return to manage the Under-18s.
