Manchester United’s next managerial appointment could have huge ramifications for Mason Greenwood ’s future. Since the sacking of head coach Ruben Amorim earlier this week, a host of names have been linked with the role at Old Trafford.
Darren Fletcher , a club legend, is currently acting as manager on a temporary basis, with his first match in charge ending in a 2-2 draw against Burnley on Wednesday.
Among the lengthy list of long-term candidates for the position is current Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi , according to The Athletic , which claims he is currently under consideration.
The Italian has previous Premier League experience thanks to his tenure at Brighton from September 2022 to June 2024, when his contract was terminated reportedly due to disagreements with the club's recruitment strategy.
De Zerbi has since made waves at Marseille, guiding them to Champions League qualification. In 2024, he was reportedly interviewed by United as they sought alternatives to Erik ten Hag, highlighting long-standing admiration for his methods, before eventually appointing Amorim.
One of De Zerbi's key players at Marseille is former United academy product and first-team star, Greenwood. De Zerbi brought Greenwood, now 24, to Marseille in the summer of 2024 .
United parted ways with Greenwood following his suspension by the club in January 2022 amid allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. Greenwood denied all charges.

All charges were subsequently dropped and the forward secured a loan move to Getafe on deadline day in the summer of 2023. Greenwood is currently enjoying the best form of his career at Marseille, having netted 15 goals in 23 appearances across all competitions this season, following a 22 goal haul last term.
However, his future at the club could be thrown into uncertainty if United show serious interest in De Zerbi. The Ligue 1 top scorer has already been linked with a move away in recent months, with Napoli, Barcelona , Atletico Madrid and two unnamed Premier League clubs reportedly keen on snapping him up.

If De Zerbi ends up becoming United's 12th manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, Greenwood might well follow his boss out of the door.
