Everton vs Wolves Premier League preview, team news and prediction

After finally ending their long winless run in the Premier League, Wolverhampton Wanderers will be aiming to secure back-to-back victories as they travel to the Hill Dickinson Stadium to face Everton on Wednesday. The Toffees, on the other hand, will be eager to bounce back after suffering a disappointing 4-2 defeat to Brentford on Sunday.
Everton had previously enjoyed a strong spell, winning four out of five matches, but their form has dipped recently, with just one victory from their last five league games. They failed to find the net in losses to Chelsea and Arsenal, then played out a goalless draw against struggling Burnley. Although Everton ended 2025 with a 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest, they couldn’t carry that momentum into the new year, falling to Brentford despite goals from Beto and Thierno Barry.
Having lost three of their last four home games, Everton have slipped into the bottom half of the table, though they remain only three points behind fifth-placed Chelsea in the race for European qualification. Hoping to return to continental competition for the first time since 2017-18, the Toffees will be determined to avoid a third straight home defeat—a fate they haven’t suffered since September 2023.
David Moyes’s side lost 2-0 to Wolves in the EFL Cup back in September, but they claimed a 3-2 victory in their Premier League meeting at Molineux in August. That result gives Everton the opportunity to complete a league double over Wolves for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
Wolves endured a miserable first half to the 2025-26 campaign, picking up just three points from their opening 19 matches. However, they managed to halt an 11-game losing streak with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Manchester United to close out 2025. Building on that result, Wolves finally celebrated their first league win of the season with a convincing 3-0 triumph over relegation rivals West Ham United on Saturday. Jhon Arias opened the scoring after an assist from Hwang Hee-chan, who then doubled the lead from the penalty spot, before 18-year-old Mateus Mane netted his first senior goal in a dominant first half at Molineux.
Rob Edwards, who took over in November, saw his team hold firm in the second half to secure his first Premier League victory at the ninth attempt. Despite this much-needed win, Wolves remain 12 points from safety, and Edwards knows his side will need several more victories to have any hope of extending their eight-year stay in the top flight.
While Wolves have lost 10 of their last 12 away league games since beating Manchester United last April, they can take heart from having won three of their last four visits to Everton. However, their only defeat in that stretch came during their most recent trip to Goodison Park in December 2024.
Everton continue to be without Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Jarrad Branthwaite, and Seamus Coleman, who are all recovering from hamstring injuries. Midfielder Carlos Alcaraz is also a doubt for the home clash, having missed the last two games with an unspecified injury. Additionally, Idrissa Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye are away on international duty in Morocco, preparing for Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Mali on Friday. David Moyes is expected to make minimal changes to his starting lineup for Wednesday’s match, though Merlin Rohl could be considered if he decides to tweak his attacking setup.
On the Wolves side, they will be without Toti, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Marshall Munetsi, Leon Chiwome, and Daniel Bentley, all sidelined through injury. Rodrigo Gomes, who has been out since October after groin surgery, is nearing a return but is unlikely to feature on Wednesday. Joao Gomes and Hwang Hee-chan will both undergo late fitness tests after being substituted in Saturday’s victory over West Ham with groin and calf problems, respectively.
Centre-back Emmanuel Agbadou is also unavailable, as he is away with the Ivory Coast national team ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations last-16 match against Burkina Faso on Tuesday.
