Manchester United will officially begin life after Ruben Amorim on Wednesday as they travel to Turf Moor to face relegation-threatened Burnley . Amorim was dismissed as head coach on Monday, with Darren Fletcher stepping in as interim manager.

Burnley come into this fixture on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, extending their winless streak in the Premier League to 11 matches. Scott Parker’s side last tasted victory with back-to-back wins over Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of October, but have since lost nine of their last 11 games—a run that firmly places them in relegation danger. The Clarets have collected just 12 points from 20 matches, leaving them 19th in the table and six points adrift of safety, with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest set to face 18th-placed West Ham United on Tuesday night.

Burnley famously won their first-ever Premier League home game against Manchester United in August 2009, but have failed to win any of the subsequent eight meetings at Turf Moor, suffering six defeats and scoring only once. In their earlier clash this season at Old Trafford, Burnley fell to a 3-2 defeat, with Bruno Fernandes netting a dramatic 97th-minute penalty to secure victory for United. Fernandes could make his return from injury for this match.

Despite the managerial upheaval, United remain sixth in the Premier League, level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea and just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, keeping their top-four ambitions alive. However, a challenging run of fixtures lies ahead.

Darren Fletcher will lead United against Burnley and is also expected to remain in charge for the FA Cup tie with Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend. It is uncertain whether a caretaker manager will be brought in before the crucial Premier League double-header against Manchester City and Arsenal later this month. A permanent successor to Amorim may not be appointed until the summer, but whoever takes the reins in the interim has a vital task ahead, with the club aiming to secure European football for the 2026-27 season.

Fletcher’s audition as interim boss begins at Turf Moor, and fans will be optimistic about the prospect of a fresh tactical approach in the coming week.

Burnley are currently among the hardest-hit teams in terms of injuries and absentees. Josh Cullen (knee), Zeki Amdouni (knee), Connor Roberts (calf), Axel Tuanzebe (AFCON), Hannibal Mejbri (AFCON), Lyle Foster (AFCON), Joe Worrall (muscle), Zian Flemming (muscle), and Jordan Beyer (hamstring) have all been ruled out for this match. However, the Clarets are hopeful that Maxime Esteve could make his return after missing the Brighton game due to injury. With four goals so far this season, Jaidon Anthony will once again be looked to for attacking inspiration.

On the Manchester United side, Darren Fletcher has confirmed that both Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount are set to return to the squad after recovering from injuries, with Fernandes potentially slotting straight back into the starting XI. However, Bryan Mbeumo (AFCON), Amad Diallo (AFCON), and Noussair Mazraoui (AFCON) remain unavailable, while Kobbie Mainoo (calf), Matthijs de Ligt (back), and Harry Maguire (thigh) are also expected to miss out due to injury.

Fletcher is likely to opt for a 4-2-3-1 formation instead of the 3-4-3 we were used to seeing under Amorim, with Patrick Dorgu possibly featuring on the right flank and starts anticipated for Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko in attack. Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte have formed a solid partnership in midfield and are expected to continue, given the limited options in that area. Ayden Heaven and Lisandro Martinez could be paired together at the heart of the defence.
