Manchester United's former assistant coach Rene Meulensteen admits there's not much to "fix" at the club in the aftermath of Ruben Amorim's exit. The Red Devils parted ways with Amorim on Monday after the 1-1 draw against bitter rivals Leeds in the Premier League .

Following Amorim's departure, Darren Fletcher, the former United and Scotland midfielder, was appointed as the caretake manager. He was at the helm during the 2-2 draw with Burnley in the top-flight on Wednesday.

Amorim had a 14-month stint as the head coach of United before his dismissal earlier this week. And now several names have already been floated as potential successors for the permanent role at Old Trafford.

United are reportedly planning to hold discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick about taking up the reins on an interim basis until the end of the season. However, Fletcher has been tasked with leading the team for the FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton this weekend.

Meulensteen - who served as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant manager at United - shared his thoughts on the club's decision to sack Amorim. He suggested that with Fletcher in temporary charge, it shouldn't take long to steer the club back on course.

"I don't think now that it needs much to fix it... I really don't think it does," Meulensteen said on BBC Radio 5 Live. You just need to put the players in the system that the players can play to their strengths and this could happen very, very, very quickly.

"The advantage of Darren Fletcher taking over as interim is two or three-fold. He knows the club.

"He's been under a very successful coach - so he knows what one looks like - and he's also been in a culture now which is not successful, so he knows what's wrong, what to fix in the short term."

United's draw with Burnley sees them sitting in seventh spot in the Premier League standings. They've slipped behind Newcastle , following their thrilling 4-3 triumph over Leeds - as well as Brentford after their win against Sunderland .

Upon being given the caretaker position, Fletcher remarked in his first press conference: "Surreal. It is an amazing honour to lead a Manchester United team especially as it was not in my wildest dreams that would be something which could potentially happen.

"To lead out the team is an amazing honour and something I am really proud to do, but not in the circumstances I expected it to happy so that is something which doesn't sit quite easy with me. I have just got to think I have a job to do and I just have to lead the team [vs Burnley] and think of the great honour and pride in doing that."

He added: "[I have to] Focus on this game and then speak after the game. It all happened very quickly on Monday with a game to prepare and a quick turnaround, training session to organise, speak to the players."
