Arsenal can follow Man City transfer example by agreeing to clever Ethan Nwaneri deal

Ethan Nwaneri's future with Arsenal is uncertain, with the North London club potentially poised to move him on either temporarily or permanently this summer

Arsenal could learn from Manchester City's business approach by instilling a buyback clause into any agreement for Ethan Nwaneri this summer.

The 19-year-old spent the latter stages of 2025/26 on loan with Marseille after failing to break into Mikel Arteta's Premier League-winning first-team, with his future no clearer now than when he initially left.

The winger managed just two goals and an assist, limited to nine Ligue 1 appearances and two more in the Coupe de France, racking up a combined total of 412 minutes of action.

As a result, Arsenal could opt to move Nwaneri on once more this summer, either temporarily or permanently.

Should the latter take precedence, Arsenal could opt to place a buyback clause in any agreement, allowing the club to bring Nwaneri back to the Emirates Stadium for a pre-agreed fee.

This idea could become a reality, given the current interest in Nwaneri as reports suggest that AC Milan, Fulham, Everton and RB Leipzig are each monitoring his situation closely.

However, I Rossoneri are thought to be preparing a bid which would give Arsenal the option to bring Nwaneri back to North London, should they choose to do so.

This option has become increasingly popular in the world of football as of late, with a number of clubs unwilling to completely cut ties with young, up and coming talents as they bid them farewell.

For example, Manchester City have started to make a habit of the formality in recent years.

The club utilised a buyback clause embedded in James Trafford's Burnley contract last summer to see him return to the Etihad for £27m, having initially moved him onto the Clarets for an initial £15m in 2023.

While the 23-year-old spent most of last term on the bench following Gianluigi Donnarumma's arrival, acquiring the ex-PSG shot-stopper might have been a masterstroke if Ederson had exited to Fenerbahce.

Similarly, the club also embedded a buyback clause into Angelino's contract after selling him to PSV Eindhoven in 2018 for £5m.

The club re-purchased the full-back the following year by utilising that clause.
