Liverpool boss Arne Slot has confirmed he will question Dominik Szoboszlai about his howler against Barnsley. The Hungarian endured a rollercoaster evening at Anfield on Monday evening.

He gave the Reds the lead with a world class strike, his sixth of the season before Jeremie Frimpong doubled Liverpool 's lead with his own standout goal.

But things then went downhill for Szoboszlai and Liverpool. An inexplicable error from the midfielder handed Barnsley a golden chance to reduce the deficit as he attempted a baffling backheel just yards from goal.

He got it drastically wrong, with Adam Phillips scoring. In the end, Liverpool eventually secured victory with late goals through Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.

But Slot remained unhappy with his midfielder and claimed he would hold talks with him after the error was slammed as 'disrespectful' by Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane. Speaking after the full-time with TNT Sports, Slot said: "What does he mean disrespectful?

"I don't think you should do that in a Premier League game, League Cup game, friendly game or a training session. It's a weird choice and I also have my opinion about it but I prefer to keep that to myself and speak about it with Dom."

On Szoboszlai's part, he issued a grovelling apology to his teammates at the end of the game. He said: “Sorry for the team again, I made it hard for us with an easy mistake I would say but football happens. We move on and take the next round.”

Szoboszlai however was far happier with his goal which was another long-range effort to add to his impressive showreel. The midfielder added: “Yeah finally I got in my position and I didn’t really think much. If I have a chance to shoot so I just take the chance and shot it and finally hit the goal so good.”

When asked if Szoboszlai's attempted backheel was 'disrespectful', Hourihane said: "I was a little bit disappointed with our goal. I don't think a player does that against Chelsea , against Arsenal or in a Champions League game. I'm a little bit disappointed with that to be honest. I thought my lads were top.

"Yeah, potentially [it was disrespectful]. He doesn't do that against Arsenal, Chelsea or a Champions League game. He doesn't do that."
