Young footballer dies after collapsing on debut as ex-Premier League star leads tributes

A 25-year-old footballer has passed away after collapsing on the pitch whilst making his debut.

Youssou Diouf was making his first appearance for Senegal side AS Saloum during a second tier fixture when, moments after the final whistle, he collapsed. Diouf had entered the match as a substitute in the closing 10 minutes of the encounter.

He required urgent medical assistance, but the Daily Star reports that he died at the scene. A statement read: "The Senegalese Professional Football League (LSFP) has learned with deep sadness of the death of Youssou Diouf, a player for AS Saloum, which occurred this Sunday, February 22, 2026.

"The incident took place following the match between Amitie FC and AS Saloum, held at the Maniang Soumare Stadium in Thies, as part of the 13th day of the Ligue 2 Championship.

"Youssou Diouf, who entered the game in the 80th minute, felt unwell after the final whistle. Despite the prompt intervention of the medical services present at the stadium and his evacuation to the regional hospital in Thies, he unfortunately passed away.

"In these painful circumstances, the president of the LSFP and all members of the board of directors present their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, the management and players of AS Saloum, as well as the entire Senegalese football family.

"The LSFP remains in contact with the relevant authorities and the club to provide all necessary support."

Premier League legend Demba Ba, who featured for Chelsea and Newcastle , also offered his respects, writing: "All our condolences to the family of Youssouf Diouf and to the AS Saloum club following the passing of our young brother. The entire @Amitie_FC club prays that Allah opens the doors of paradise for him."

Further tributes flooded in on social media: "Love and light to his family." Another commented: "May his soul rest in peace, and may his loved ones find strength and comfort in this painful moment."
