Welbeck’s Chelsea Move Revives Neville’s 10-Year United Regret

Gary Neville has publicly criticised Manchester United’s decision to offload Danny Welbeck, as the 35-year-old striker closes in on a move to Chelsea after an agreement was struck with Brighton & Hove Albion.

The transfer was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday morning, with Welbeck granted permission to undergo his medical ahead of completing the switch to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former United captain was unambiguous. Neville said he had been making this argument for a decade – that United should never have sold Welbeck – and that the striker had gone away and done brilliantly well to prove the point.

Neville also described Welbeck as a fantastic player, noting that he had been excellent for England both as a team-mate and when Neville worked alongside him in a coaching capacity. He added that the Chelsea move gives Xabi Alonso’s side a real option up front.

Welbeck came through the ranks at Old Trafford before leaving in 2014. He has since built a consistent Premier League career at Arsenal, Watford and Brighton, scoring 13 goals in the 2025/26 season alone – following ten the campaign before. United are believed to have considered bringing him back in past windows, but a transfer never materialised.
