Solskjaer 'prime candidate' for Old Trafford return as interim boss

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a 'prime candidate' to return to Old Trafford as interim manager once again.

The Manchester United legend previously took over from a Portuguese manager in winter when he replaced José Mourinho as interim in December 2018 and he could do the same following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim .

The Norwegian was able to instantly change the move at the club with United winning 14 of 19 games before officially being given the job on a permanent basis.

United finished second and reached a Europa League final but things unravelled for Solskjaer early in the 2011/22 season which eventually paved the way for Erik tan Hag to arrive.

According to The Guardian , director of football Jason Wilcox considers Solskjaer to be a leading candidate for the role with Michael Carrick – who worked as part of the 52-year-old's staff at United – also on the shortlist.

Former United player Darren Fletcher will be in the dugout for Wednesday's game against Burnley at Turf Moor with Jonny Evans also expected to return to the club as a coach.
