Ruben Amorim backed Benjamin Sesko to succeed at Manchester United amid his early struggles in the Premier League . The Slovenian arrived at Old Trafford last summer in a £74million transfer and was looked at as part of United's forward future.

Despite a fruitful stint at RB Leipzig where he scored 39 goals in 87 games, the 22-year-old struggled to find his feet in the starting stages of his Red Devils career. Netting just two goals in 16 appearances before his brace against Burnley - the first game since Amorim's sacking - pressure continued to mount on the striker.

In the midst of his poor form in front of goal, Sesko - who has since scored five goals in seven games under Michael Carrick - maintained the support and belief of his manager with the Portuguese boss insisting that he will lead the line for United in years to come.

Speaking prior to United's 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, Amorim claimed Sesko has even more potential than he first thought as he said: "I understand how things are in football and he's going to struggle. That is normal.

"He has no experience here and then the first impact when everyone says that you are so good, you are the next big thing, and you hear about that with Sesko, and then you come to one club that is the hardest club."

Sesko was criticised by large portions of the media, including United icon Gary Neville . Amorim stated maintaining coolness under pressure with the noise of the world surrounding you is especially difficult for a young player.

"If you don't perform every week, you are going to hear a lot of things from club legends, from pundits, from the media, and sometimes they are right," Amorim added.

"To have the ability to understand that is normal and still maintain your level of confidence is really hard for a young kid, especially for a young kid that is a control freak, wants to control everything, and he's not going to control everything.

"So, I know, and I say that when I start training with Ben, he has more potential than I was thinking. He’s going to struggle, and we need to understand how he likes to play also to put in our ideas. "So, [with] everything, I think I'm quite relaxed with that. He is going to be our striker for the long term. But he's going to have these struggles and these bumps during the ride, and that is a normal thing in football."
