Ruben Amorim spotted in Portugal as ex-Man Utd boss tipped for new job days after exit

Ruben Amorim has been spotted in Portugal after being tipped for a managerial return in his homeland. The former Sporting Lisbon boss was sacked by Manchester United earlier this month following a disappointing year at Old Trafford.

And just days after seeing his contract ripped up, Amorim has decided to return to Portugal. CNN Portugal shared images of the 40-year-old touching down in his homeland on Saturday evening alongside his son.

Amorim was mobbed by reporters but chose not to answer any of their questions before getting into a car. It is not the first time that Amorim has been seen since seeing his spell with United brutally ended.

He was also pictured leaving his Cheshire home on Monday alongside wife Maria Joao Diogo. Amorim’s return to Portugal coincides with the former Sporting Lisbon boss being tipped for a managerial return in his home country.

Asked by Hard Rock Bet where he could go next, United icon Gary Pallister said: “I don’t know. He’s a young man and this may take time to get over. He certainly looked like a manager under immense pressure.”

He added: “I don’t know where Ruben ends up next. He might go back to Portugal. I’m sure someone from Portugal would want him after the job he did over there with Sporting. He has got time to sit and think about it. I’m sure there will be some scar tissue from this. It’s been a tough ride.

“He’s been under the microscope since day one and never really got any leeway with his system. In the history of the Premier League , maybe only one team has won the Premier League playing a back five – Chelsea under Antonio Conte . So, what does that tell you?

“At the moment, you’re looking at the club and there’s just not a great deal of positivity around Manchester United .”

Amorim had enjoyed plenty of success in Portugal before being appointed by Manchester United as Erik ten Hag’s successor. Across spells with Braga and Sporting Lisbon, he won three Portuguese cups, as well as two Primeira Liga titles.

But his time at Old Trafford was a huge disappointment, having led the club to their worst-ever Premier League finish, while they were also defeated in last season’s Europa League final by Tottenham Hotspur. Things appeared to improve slightly this term on the pitch but his relationship with director of football Jason Wilcox quickly deteriorated, leaving United chiefs with no choice but to jettison him.
