Rio Ferdinand's clear next Man Utd manager message amid Oliver Glasner and Enzo Maresca links

Rio Ferdinand has insisted he would "put all my money on" Oliver Glasner not getting the nod as Ruben Amorim's replacement at Manchester United .

Crystal Palace boss Glasner, 51, has been touted as a potential candidate to take over from Amorim at Old Trafford following the club's decision to dismiss the Portuguese head coach on Monday morning .

Since arriving at Palace in February 2024, Glasner has impressed, leading them to FA Cup success at the end of last season and the Community Shield at the beginning of this campaign. The former Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt manager has recorded 41 victories and 28 draws across his 93 matches at the helm in south London.

Following United's decision to part ways with Amorim, Glasner's name has been mentioned as a possible replacement. However, Ferdinand believes the Red Devils won't opt for Glasner, primarily because of his preference for a three-at-the-back system.

"No way," former United defender Ferdinand stated on Rio Ferdinand Presents when questioned about Glasner potentially taking charge. "There's no way, I don't think. I would be so surprised if Glasner gets an opportunity to be Man United manager given that he plays three-at-the-back.

"Based on how this team has performed and the narrative that has been surrounding the team since Amorim has been here: I would put all my money on it that he doesn't get that job."

Amorim has faced criticism for persisting with his three-at-the-back system, despite the team's performances and results not improving at the pace some had hoped for. Indeed, after employing his favoured 3-4-2-1 formation for most of last Tuesday's 1-1 draw against bottom-of-the-table Wolves , Amorim found himself under increased scrutiny.

On the other hand, Glasner has found success with his 3-4-3 formation at Palace. Marc Guehi, Maxence Lacroix and Chris Richards have typically formed a solid defensive trio, with Daniel Munoz and Tyrick Mitchell providing width as wing-backs. Adam Wharton and either Will Hughes or Jefferson Lerma have been deployed in midfield, with a dynamic front three including Jean-Philippe Mateta.

This system has proven effective for Glasner, with Palace enjoying their maiden European campaign and comfortably positioned mid-table in the Premier League . Despite losing four of their last five top-flight matches, the Eagles are just four points adrift of fifth-placed Chelsea .

As for United, Darren Fletcher is set to step in as interim manager for Wednesday's match against Burnley . They will be aiming to get back on the winning track following consecutive draws against Wolves and Leeds United .
