Hull City could be hit with a surprise points deduction immediately after securing promotion to the Premier League . The Tigers scraped into the Championship top six on the final day of the campaign, before achieving play-off glory.
After defeating Millwall in the semi-final, Hull endured a tense wait to discover their final opponents, due to the Spygate saga involving Middlesbrough and Southampton . Ultimately, it was Middlesbrough, with Hull securing a dramatic late winner at Wembley to seal their Premier League comeback .
However, the celebration could be short-lived for Hull, given they're in danger of falling foul of the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), according to the BBC . It's reported Hull must offload players before making any signings, having exceeded their PSR calculations by £6million with an end-of-month deadline fast approaching.
Should they be found guilty of breaching the regulations, the sanction will likely be a six-point deduction, as that represents the standard punishment for clubs overspending between £6m and £8m. In comparison, clubs that exceed the threshold by £4m to £5m receive five-point deductions, four points for breaches of £2m to £4m, and three points if they surpass the limit by under £2m.
Everton and Nottingham Forest stand as the most prominent clubs to have fallen foul of PSR regulations. The Merseysiders were docked eight points during the 2023/24 season - reduced from an initial 10-point deduction - while Forest had four points stripped from them during that same campaign .
The cause of their potentially overspend stems from promotion clauses written into the contracts of players who featured in their squad throughout the 2025/26 season. This means Hull must raise funds through player sales before the end of the month to avoid a points deduction during their first top-flight campaign since 2016/17.
The club are keen to protect the core of the squad that earned them promotion, with the BBC identifying three players who could be shown the door. The broadcaster reports that David Akintola, Abu Kamara and Kasey Palmer would all be permitted to leave by the play-off winners.
During a Q&A event held at Hull's ground, owner Acun Ilicali said: "We have overspent and we have to sell some players before 1 July. I'm not afraid.
