Oliver Glasner: INEOS must agree to one non‑negotiable demand to convince German tactician to join

On Monday, the breaking news from M16 was that Ruben Amorim was out of a job. INEOS had opted to part ways with the Portuguese tactician after finally conceding he was not the right man to restore Manchester United to their glory days.

In the immediate aftermath, Darren Fletcher stepped up to fill the gap on Manchester United’s technical bench. Assisted by Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion, he oversaw the side as they battled to a 1‑1 draw with Burnley.

The trio are expected to once again be in the dugout when United host Brighton at Old Trafford in the FA Cup third round. By then, however, the club are anticipated to have decided who will serve as caretaker head coach until the end of the season. Either Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick is tipped to take on the role.

Yet while a caretaker steadies the ship, the more pressing work of appointing the next permanent head coach continues behind the scenes. Speculation is already rife over whom the Red Devils might turn to.

Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner has emerged as a leading candidate, and the latest reports suggest his links to United carry weight. Glasner has brilliantly transformed Palace from relegation battlers into a side competing in Europe.

Although Palace would like to keep him long‑term, his contract expires in the summer, and when it does, he is widely expected to leave Selhurst Park. United could well be his next destination, with The Peoples Person reporting that, weeks before Amorim’s dismissal, Glasner had already been contacted about the job.

As the Glasner story gathers pace, an intriguing bombshell has dropped: the 51‑year‑old tactician has already outlined his demands if he is to take charge at Old Trafford.

“Glasner would require ironclad guarantees of substantial financial backing in the transfer market before committing to the Red Devils,” reports Fraser Fletcher of Teamtalk .

“His primary condition revolves around transfer assurances, ensuring he has the resources to reshape the squad in his image. Oliver isn’t one to take on a new project without the tools to succeed.”

The German coach is wise to make his stance clear before committing to such a project.

Much has been said about why Amorim was sacked, but it was evident in the lead‑up to his dismissal that he was a frustrated figure, not only because his tactics were under scrutiny, but also because the club were reluctant to back him in the winter transfer market as he had expected.

Without assurances in the transfer market, any manager is inevitably hamstrung. And with United fans as demanding as they are, the next head coach will need those guarantees if he is to deliver.

Whether INEOS agree to Glasner’s non‑negotiables remains to be seen. But Glasner or not, whoever takes the reins at Old Trafford must be backed heavily if United are to return to the top where they belong.
