Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is one of the Premier League manager being linked with a move to Manchester United after the Old Trafford hierarchy made the decision to sack Ruben Amorim. The Austrian's comments earlier on this season suggested that United had turned a corner under the guidance of the Portuguese head coach - but his departure now says otherwise.

United endured a torrid calendar year of 2025, finishing the season in 15th position, claiming just 42 points in the Premier League, winning nine games - their worst return in the competition's history. However, this term, they've claimed 31 points from 20 games and are knocking on the door of the European places.

Things had certainly improved in terms of points return, but performances have been poor with United struggling to adapt to Amorim's 3-4-3 system. A draw with relegation strugglers Wolves and a point at Elland Road last weekend saw Amorim explode in his post-match press conference taking aim at the club's hierarchy and former player Gary Neville .

United released a statement confirming the decision to sack the Portuguese coach, making it clear they want to finish the season as high as possible.

Glasner, who has won the FA Cup and Community Shield in recent months with the Eagles, is among those to be linked with the vacant managerial position and plays a similar system to outgoing boss Amorim.

Speaking earlier this season about United's system under the Portuguese head coach, Glasner defended Amorim pointing to the team's underlying numbers.

"It's really funny talking about the 3-4-3 system, and I think United have the highest xG in the Premier League for scoring goals," Glasner said back in November.

"Their team has changed. Especially in attack. They needed more goals and invested £200m - buying three players up front.

"Also, now they have players who can play very intense like [Bryan] Mbeumo. For me, that's impressive to see. We compared it [their last meeting] to where they are now.

"I think their work-rate is much higher than it was last year and then they get the reward."

Glasner could be a ready-made replacement for Amorim, while his future at Selhurst Park is also up in the air with his contract set to expire this summer. The Austrian yet to pen a new deal with the Eagles and may, in turn, be the answer to United's woes.

"We're playing the same system," Glasner said earlier this season when explaining the benefits of lining up in a 3-4-3.

"So it looks like it's a good attacking system. Also, as we show it, you can have a good defensive structure with it.

"It's all about what you do with the system and how fluid you are in attack and how creative you are."
