Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly prepared to make a comeback to Manchester United as the club intensifies its hunt for Ruben Amorim's successor. United severed ties with the Portuguese manager on Monday morning, after 14 months of him being in charge.

The news came after Amorim 's dramatic press conference after Sunday's 1-1 stalemate with Leeds United at Elland Road, where he said: "I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear."

The hunt for Amorim's replacement has now begun. Darren Fletcher will assume caretaker responsibilities for tomorrow evening's Premier League fixture against newly-promoted Burnley at Turf Moor.

United may opt to appoint an interim manager through to the season's conclusion, before securing a permanent successor in the summer. Reports suggest that former manager Solskjaer would welcome the opportunity to step in on a temporary basis.

Fabrizio Romano claims that the Norwegian has 'shown interest' in taking the reins, irrespective of the length of a potential contract. Solskjaer has been without a managerial position since departing Besiktas in the summer.

The ex-striker was in charge of United for almost three years, initially as caretaker before being made permanent. His time at the club ran from December 2018 to November 2021.

During that tenure, he oversaw 168 matches, securing 91 victories, 37 draws and suffering 40 defeats. His final match in charge saw his side fall to a 4-1 away defeat to Watford in the Premier League.

Whether United will accept Solskjaer's offer remains to be seen. United are said to be content with Fletcher taking the reins for more than just a single match as they mull over potential successors to Amorim.

As such, it's believed they're not in any hurry to make any final decision.

Several other names have been thrown into the hat for the vacant position, including Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner . The Austrian has made quite an impression at Selhurst Park, guiding the Eagles to their first major silverware by winning the FA Cup last season.

After their clash with Burnley, United will turn their attention to the FA Cup, hosting Premier League rivals Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday (4.30pm kick-off). They then welcome city rivals Manchester City for the derby on Saturday, 17 January (12.30pm kick-off).
