Ole Gunnar Solskjaer open to Manchester United return after Ruben Amorim’s departure
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be interested in a shock return to Manchester United as caretaker head coach, per journalist Rich Fay .
The Red Devils parted company with Ruben Amorim after his stunning comments about the club’s hierarchy following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United.
United have put Darren Fletcher in interim charge, but they are looking to appoint a caretaker head coach as a permanent successor to Amorim is expected to be signed in the summer.
Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner is reportedly the leading candidate for the permanent role.
Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca, Gareth Southgate, Thomas Tuchel and Michael Carrick are also said to be in contention.
With a short-term role potentially available, Solskjaer has expressed an interest in making a shock return to his former club.
The Norwegian has been out of a job since being sacked by Turkish outfit Besiktas in August after they were knocked out of the Conference League playoffs by Lausanne.
United appointed Solskjaer as a caretaker manager in December 2018 following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
But he led the club to an incredible 11-match unbeaten run, prompting the club’s hierarchy to hand him the permanent role.
Solskjaer’s two full seasons saw United securing third and second-place finishes in the Premier League. They also reached five semi-finals out of six in cup competitions under the 52-year-old.
However, a miserable run during the 2021-22 season when they won just once in seven top-flight matches eventually led to his dismissal in November 2021.
