Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expected to seal Manchester United return on Friday

With Ruben Amorim out the door, Darren Fletcher will take interim charge of Manchester United against Burnley this evening.

Fletcher, who took Sir Alex Ferguson’s blessing before accepting the role , was coaching United’s under-18s before Amorim’s departure. Former United defender Jonny Evans has been called in to assist Fletcher for the tricky away fixture at Turf Moor.

However, United are thought to be actively working on putting a more experienced figure at the helm, at least until the end of the campaign.

United have reportedly held talks with a number of candidates over a caretaker role at Old Trafford.

According to The Athletic , Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick are in the frame for the role.

Carrick, who was part of the Norwegian’s backroom staff at United between 2018 and 2021, most recently led Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Solskjaer had a mixed spell with Besiktas in Turkey. It is believed he has a house in Cheshire and would be open to helping his former club.

The Treble-winning striker is a hugely popular figure in Manchester.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the idea of his appointment has the backing of several superstars, including skipper Bruno Fernandes and former captain Harry Maguire, who once labelled him as “unbelievable”.

Now, it seems United are leaning towards bringing back their “Baby-faced Assassin.”

According to Norwegian publication VG , United are negotiating an agreement to hire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their new manager.

VG add: “According to VG’s information, work is now underway to sign a contract for Solskjær next Friday.”

However, the length of that is unknown at this stage, or whether it will be short or medium term.

It is expected that the 52-year-old will be in Molde on Thursday for the funeral of Norwegian coaching legend Age Hareide.
