Newcastle finally confirm Jaissle as new manager to replace Eddie Howe

Newcastle have finally confirmed the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as their new manager. Jaissle, 38, arrives from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, with Newcastle paying a £9.5million compensation fee.

The German replaces Eddie Howe, who shockingly resigned midway through pre-season last week. Jaissle has already been working with Newcastle's squad in La Manga, Spain for the last few days.

But Al-Ahli wanted to delay the announcement until 7pm on Wednesday. Jaissle spent three years in Saudi Arabia following spells with Red Bull Salzburg and Liefering in Austria.

The 38-year-old guided Al-Ahli - who are owned by Newcastle's owners, the Saudi Public Investment Fund - to winning the Asian Champions League in each of the last two seasons. But Jaissle has decided to move to St James' Park, kicking off a new era.

"When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice," he commented in Newcastle's announcement. "The ambition of the club, the vision for the future and the opportunity ahead made this an incredibly compelling place to be.

"I have followed the club's journey closely in recent years and the progress that has been made is clear for everyone to see. I am incredibly excited about the future. I fully and unreservedly believe in this project, the ambition and the direction the club is taking.

Jaissle's first Premier League game in charge will be at home to Liverpool on Sunday, August 23.
