Gus Poyet believes it's too soon to assess Michael Carrick's suitability as a permanent Manchester United head coach. The ex-Red Devils midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable start to his second spell in the Old Trafford hot-seat.

Carrick was handed the role as Ruben Amorim's replacement on an interim basis until the end of the current season , and has so far positioned them favourably for Champions League qualification. Benjamin Sesko's second-half strike secured United victory against Everton on their maiden visit to Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday evening, and stretched their unbeaten run to six matches.

There have been calls for Carrick to be given the permanent manager's position whilst some former United stars have suggested that the club require a fresh approach. Poyet , though, believes that the club must exercise patience with the decision and hold off until the season's end before forming conclusions.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News via Premier League betting odds site BetWright, he said: "I think he needs to finish well, I think it's early, knows the club, he has experience in his previous job, he's done very well. He knows what is suitable for for the club.

"Now long term, that's a decision that Manchester needs to talk about, I don't want to go back but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was similar, everybody was talking he would be here for 10 years and then he was not.

"It's early, but what he's done so far, with the same players as Amorim, it's going well for my United. So, we'll see how we finish the season and then we will be in a better position (to judge)."

United's Premier League-winning defender Gary Neville is amongst those arguing that despite Carrick's encouraging start in the Old Trafford dugout, they need to secure the finest candidate on the market. Roberto De Zerbi , Thomas Tuchel and Oliver Glasner are amongst the figures being mentioned for the role.

De Zerbi, who left Marseille earlier this year, has been consistently linked with the position and was viewed as a possibility even before Erik ten Hag's arrival in 2022. Tuchel, meanwhile, was mooted as a candidate following England's 2026 World Cup run, but the German has subsequently signed a new deal with the Three Lions.

Elsewhere, Glasner will leave Crystal Palace in the summer when his contract expires. And Neville believes United still require a manager who is 'best in class'. He told Sky Sports on Monday: "I think Manchester United have to pursue another manager right now around the fact of you don't know how the results are going to go.

"Little things like [Thomas] Tuchel re-signing with England does start to take away the options for Manchester United and they don't harm Michael's chances of getting the job. If he gets United into the Champions League there will be a lot of fever around that he should be appointed.

"I'm not against him being appointed. I love him to bits and think that he's done an incredible job so far. I just feel that Manchester United should go for the best class of manager available.

"They've had young and inexperienced managers in the last two picks which have not quite worked. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come in before as an ex-player, who did a very good job for a couple of years, but that didn't work in the end. So I just feel removing as much risk as possible is the right option.

"But people who know me will know that's not personal against Michael because I love him to bits. He's a great lad, a great player and someone who's doing a very good job as a coach now."
