Michael Carrick could be announced in next 48 hours as huge Darren Fletcher update emerges
Michael Carrick could be unveiled as Manchester United’s interim coach in the next 48 hours, as a major update on the future of Darren Fletcher is also issued.
United have been on the hunt for a caretaker boss since parting ways with Ruben Amorim last week. Amorim was relieved of his duties after 14 months as head coach.
The club elected to part ways with him after his explosive remarks before and after the 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.
It later emerged that Amorim fell out with members of the Old Trafford hierarchy, chiefly director of football Jason Wilcox. The pair did not see eye to eye on various issues including Amorim’s perceived tactical inflexibility and what the Portuguese tactician saw as broken transfer promises early in the window.
Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have been mentioned as the likely candidates to be the interim manager until the end of the season. United will then make a permanent appointment in the summer.
Solskjaer was widely seen as the favourite but the tide appears to have changed and it now looks like Carrick is the most likely individual to assume the role. United have been in talks with the representatives of both Solskjaer and Carrick.
A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Carrick is the leading candidate to get the job and now, this has been confirmed by Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic.
Whitwell has also provided an update on Fletcher, indicating that the 41-year-old is likely to remain within the first-team set-up and assist Carrick.
According to Whitwell, “Michael Carrick has moved into pole position for the role as Manchester United’s interim head coach until the end of the season.”
“Darren Fletcher, in caretaker charge for two games following Ruben Amorim’s sacking, is in line to potentially assist Carrick as a coach. It is thought another coach coming in to support Carrick would also be on the cards.”
“United insist no final decision has been made, but an announcement is anticipated in the next 48 hours.”
The report adds that the process is being led by Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada. Final sign-off will be supplied by co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers.
