Micah Richards has backed Manchester United’ s appointment of Michael Carrick but believes he could cause a fresh problem for the Red Devils. United confirmed the return of their former midfielder on Tuesday as he takes the reins from Ruben Amorim until the end of the season.

The ex-Middlesbrough boss will oversee the remainder of the campaign and will then step back in place of a more permanent name. The club’s potential shortlist has already been revealed ahead of that with England boss Thomas Tuchel , Carlo Ancelotti and Mauricio Pochettino all among the contenders.

However, Richards believes that should Carrick impress within the next few months, United could be presented with a fresh dilemma over whether to hand him the job permanently or stick to their original plan.

Speaking on Sky Sports , he said: "The only question I would have is what happens if he goes on a really good run?

"We know the situation with Tuchel and his contract running until the end of the World Cup. There are some other managers available and that is the one conundrum I see. In terms of the here and right now, I think it's a good appointment.

"Obviously the confidence looks really low at the moment. A new manager, a new bounce. It didn't quite work with Fletcher the last couple of games. In terms of what they need right now, I think he's a good fit. Long term it's yet to be seen, but for right now, I like it."

Carrick has already been told the target that he needs to achieve between now and the end of the season. United chiefs have spoken to Red Devils stars and underlined their expectations for the remainder of the campaign, with a Champions League spot being their main target.

As it stands, United sit seventh in the Premier League table but just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool . Carrick will be hoping for a dream start to his second stint in charge this weekend as United take on rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Speaking after his return was announced, Carrick said: “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour. I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.

“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here.

“There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.”
