Mason Greenwood could be faced with Man Utd reunion as Marseille star gets major update

Mason Greenwood's potential switch to Fenerbahce would see him reconnect with at least one recognisable face . The former Manchester United prospect will be reunited with ex-colleague Fred should a move to Istanbul materialise.

The destiny of the Marseille forward will be determined following Fenerbahce's presidential ballot. Former chairman Aziz Yildirim will reclaim his previous position after an eight-year hiatus after being elected back into office on Sunday.

There was speculation Yildirim would proceed with the club's pursuit of Greenwood in a transfer that could cost £47.5million. Owing to a 40 per cent sell-on clause inserted in his Marseille contract, that would secure United approximately £19m from the arrangement .

Nevertheless, it's not certain Yildirim will push forward with the Turkish club's pursuit of Greenwood. Hakan Safi, who was Yildirim's principal challenger for the Fenerbahce presidency, was an outspoken champion of the club's approach for Greenwood.

Safi even went as far as to claim a four-year agreement had already been secured with Greenwood should he have triumphed in the election. Even so, reports in recent weeks had also suggested Yildirim was also a proponent of the deal.

Fred, 33, and Greenwood featured together on 92 occasions across four campaigns at Old Trafford. The duo secured victory in 49 of those matches and suffered defeat just 17 times together.

The only team-mates Greenwood has lined up alongside more frequently in his career to date are Harry Maguire (107 games) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (101). As a result, those are also the only two players with whom he has racked up more wins.

The pair were also part of the same United team that finished as Europa League runners-up in 2021. And their chances of winning silverware together would be even higher in Turkey.

It suggests an encouraging prospect should Greenwood and Fred reunite this summer. Fred departed United to join Fener in 2023 and helped the club secure the Turkish Super Cup last year.

The Brazilian is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract in Istanbul and remains a hugely influential figure within the squad . He has turned out 125 times for Fenerbahce in just three years, clocking up more than 40 appearances per season on average.

Yet Yildirim's task will be to guide the club back to Super Lig glory after failing to lift the top-flight trophy since 2014. The club has finished as league runners-up in five consecutive seasons while bitter rivals Galatasaray have largely dominated during that stretch.
