Manchester United’s Amad Diallo scores superb goal to inspire Ivory Coast to comfortable AFCON victory
Manchester United star Amad Diallo continued his excellent form at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Tuesday, as he scored to help Ivory Coast win 3-0 over Burkina Faso .
Amad put his side ahead in the 20th minute when he intricately dribbled through the opposition’s defence before lifting the ball over the goalkeeper into the net.
The 23-year-old then turned provider as his low cross reached Yan Diomande , who side-footed into the net from 18 yards.
Brentford forward Dango Ouattara threatened to pull one back before Bazoumana Toure put the game to bed with a late third.
The 2023 AFCON winners will now lock horns with Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in the quarter-finals following their 3-1 win over Benin on Monday.
Amad has been one of the standout performers at the tournament so far, with three goals and an assist to his name.
The Ivorian has also been impressive for United this season, making five direct goal contributions in 15 Premier League appearances.
But he will go back to a new manager at Old Trafford, as Ruben Amorim has been sacked after a breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy.
Darren Fletcher is now the interim coach , but a caretaker appointment is expected to follow.
Amorim played Amad out of position in the right wing-back role.
With a new manager at the helm, it remains to be seen how the 23-year-old is utilised in the team on his return.
