Manchester United signing set for debut as Michael Carrick handed huge boost against PSG

Red Devils will be without two key players against Champions League holders

Youri Tielemans is in line to make his Manchester United debut against Paris Saint-Germain this weekend as Bruno Fernandes also returns, though Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha will both miss out.

Tielemans joined up with Michael Carrick’s squad for the first time last week after a holiday that followed Belgium’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals in North America.

The former Leicester, Monaco and Anderlecht midfielder was signed by United from Aston Villa last month for a fee of around £35million, penning a five-year contract at Old Trafford until 2031.

Tielemans was not involved in last weekend’s 2-1 pre-season friendly victory over Atletico Madrid in the Snapdragon Cup at Stockholm’s Strawberry Arena, but has been included in Carrick’s 22-man squad heading to Gothenburg for Saturday’s showdown with PSG.

The 29-year-old is expected to make his maiden United appearance against the reigning back-to-back European champions at the Nya Ullevi Stadium.

Influential captain Fernandes should also feature in Sweden after reporting for duty this week following his own post-World Cup holiday, along with Portugal team-mate Diogo Dalot, Brazilian forward Cunha and Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui.

However, despite now being back in the fold, Cunha will not be available to face PSG. The same is also true of first-choice goalkeeper Lammens, who returned to training on the same day as Belgium team-mate Tielemans.

United have confirmed that the duo will remain at Carrington in order to “fully recover from non-related minor illnesses”, with the expectation that they will re-join the squad during next week’s training camp in the Republic of Ireland.

That camp is followed by a meeting with rivals Leeds at Croke Park in Dublin on August 12, before the Red Devils complete their summer campaign against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland on August 15.

United begin the new Premier League season - Carrick’s first as permanent manager following a successful spell in interim charge last term - away at Championship play-off winners Hull on August 22.

Striker Benjamin Sesko remains absent for United due to a shin injury that has lingered from last season, while Lammens’ absence plus that of new goalkeeper signing Karl Darlow and the departures of Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek - joining Celta Vigo and Middlesbrough respectively - leave Dermot Mee and teenager Fred Heath to back up veteran Tom Heaton.

Matthijs de Ligt is not yet ready to return from a long-term back injury, while Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez all remain on holiday after the World Cup and will join up with United in Ireland.

15-year-old JJ Gabriel is not involved this weekend after making his senior United debut off the bench against Atletico, where a second-half Bryan Mbeumo brace led Carrick’s side to victory.

Fellow youngsters Jim Thwaites, Jaydan Kamason and Ethan Williams also drop out, though Heath takes the place of Bayindir and the likes of Harry Amass, Dan Armer, Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher and Shea Lacey all remain in the squad, as does Joshua Zirkzee, who has been heavily linked with a summer exit.
