Joshua Zirkzee’s move from Manchester United to Roma has been left up in the air, the Italian club’s director Ricky Massara has admitted. The Dutchman was previously linked with a return to Serie A after falling out of favour with Ruben Amorim .

Roma were among the sides interested , with a loan deal touted. But with the Portuguese coach having been sacked this week, that has given Zirkzee fresh hope of career revival at Old Trafford. Speaking about a potential deal, Massara has admitted that a deal now looks slightly more complicated than before as Roma attempt to sign a striker.

“It’s true that there are negotiations in progress with both Atletico Madrid and [Giacomo] Raspadori. The situation is evolving, we knew the timing could be affected by the Spanish Supercup. We expect it to be resolved one way or another fairly soon,” Massara told Sky Sport Italia.

“He [Zirkzee] is a Manchester United centre-forward liked by many clubs, not just us. Naturally, the situation is different after this change of management, there are no contacts in progress, but I wouldn’t focus on individual names.

“We know this window is an opportunity to reinforce the squad in an area where we have struggled to convert chances into goals, so we will try to use it.”

Zirkzee, 24, was signed in July 2024 in a £36.5million move from Bologna . He has gone on to make 63 appearances since then but has scored just nine goals.

The striker has three-and-a-half years left on his contract at Old Trafford. Fresh talk over his future comes amid glowing praise from teammate Matheus Cunha.

Speaking after the recent draw with Leeds United , the Brazilian said: "Josh is a pleasure. I feel like he has a lot of quality. Of course, his situation is not easy, but he has everything to change the situation. We need him. He needs to understand this and then everyone can count on him.

"But yeah, we are here to push him. And I think after the goal last week and the assist today, I think it will give him confidence to be more with us and then understand more his role in the team."

Away from Roma, Zirkzee was also linked with a potential switch to Premier League rivals Everton . The striker could get a couple of chances over the next week should an exit not come to fruition. United take on Burnley on Wednesday, ahead of getting their FA Cup campaign underway against Brighton at the weekend.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
