Man Utd ‘agree’ interim appointment ahead of Manchester Derby

Man Utd have reportedly reached an agreement with Michael Carrick to appoint him as the interim head coach of the club.

The Red Devils have been searching for someone to step into the role following the departure of Ruben Amorim last week.

The Portuguese tactician was relieved of his duties following pointed comments he made after drawing 1-1 with Leeds United amid a falling out with the club’s hierarchy.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had also been in the running for the post, but Carrick has emerged as the man for the job after the club engaged in talks with both coaches in recent days.

The Athletic report that an announcement is expected “soon” after a deal, which includes Carrick’s proposed coaching staff, was agreed “in principle”. Contractual details are being finalised by lawyers on both sides.

Negotiations took place late into Monday night, according to Sky Sports , who claim that is when “all of the outstanding issues were ironed out”.

The former Man Utd midfielder “could sign the paperwork later on Tuesday afternoon” and has arrived at Carrington training ground to meet with director of football Jason Wilcox.

Former England assistant coach Steve Holland will join the backroom staff, as could Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion and Jonny Evans. Darren Fletcher is expected to return to his role as U18’s head coach after overseeing a draw with Wolves and defeat to Newcastle United.

Carrick is expected to be in the dugout for this weekend’s meeting with rivals with Manchester City . The Manchester Derby will take place at Old Trafford this Saturday afternoon.

The 44-year-old was previously installed as caretaker manager after Solskjaer was sacked in 2021, winning twice and drawing once. He went on to manage Middlesbrough, taking the club to the play-offs in his first season, before finishing eighth and tenth in the following seasons. He was sacked at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Carrick made 316 appearances for Man Utd as a player, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2008 as well as five Premier League titles.
