Liverpool transfer news: Fresh Marc Guehi update emerges as defender officially joins

Liverpool's title defence has not gone to plan this season. Yet Arne Slot and club officials don't seem to be in a rush to bolster the Reds' squad with major first-team reinforcements.
On top of an already inconsistent campaign, the Reds have had to deal with a number of absences over the Christmas and New Year period. Mo Salah has been – and still is – on duty at the Africa Cup of Nations for Egypt, Alexander Isak is out for some time with injury while Hugo Ekitike has even been absent of late with a minor fitness concern.
Meanwhile Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahmia Konate are the club's only fit first-team centre-back pairing. With Liverpool's pursuit of Marc Guehi hitting a crucial point and Liverpool bolstering their youth ranks, Mirror Football takes a look at the latest news coming out of Anfield.
Manchester City believe they have beaten Liverpool to the signing of Guehi . Both clubs have been in extensive talks with the Crystal Palace defender, with Liverpool coming close to landing Guehi last summer only for the deal to collapse on transfer deadline day.
Liverpool's reluctance to go back in for Guehi means City boss Pep Guardiola has taken advantage in a bid to sign the 25-year-old. Reports state City are confident of securing a £30million deal in the coming days.

Guardiola has been eager to strengthen his defence, following injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias. The Spanish manager's need to bring in reinforcements saw him convince the Etihad hierarchy to agree a fee with Palace.
Guehi will be out of contract in June and some of Europe's biggest clubs are interested in recruiting the star on a free transfer in the summer. These include Bayern Munich , Real Madrid , Barcelona and Inter Milan, with Guehi able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club this month. City, however, appear to have stolen a march on all of them, including Liverpool.
Liverpool have wrapped up a deal to sign 19-year-old centre-back Noah Adekoya from Burnley . The defender announced on Wednesday that he had signed for the club he has supported since he was a boy.
Adekoya was born on Merseyside but has played for Burnley for the bulk of his career so far. He joined the Clarets at U12s level after undergoing trials with Liverpool.

Adekoya captained Burnley U18s to the title last season and signed his first professional contract in October. However, Liverpool have now come calling as they look to flood their academy with a series of young defensive talents.
