Jose Mourinho does not know whether Ruben Amorim will speak publicly about his Manchester United departure, but has told him what he would do.

Amorim was sacked as Red Devils boss on Monday morning after explosive comments about his position at the club and the hierarchy after a draw at Leeds .

Seemingly frustrated over influence from above, the 40-year-old insisted he was the manager and not a head coach, while also confirming his intention to leave at the end of his contract in 2027.

His departure came far sooner than the end of the 2026/27 season, with Old Trafford decision-makers swinging the axe less than a day after those comments made at Elland Road.

Manchester United are now in search of a new boss, with Darren Fletcher stepping into the void to lead the team at Burnley on Wednesday night.

Mourinho was appointed Red Devils manager in May 2016 and dismissed in December 2018, despite finishing second in the Premier League in 2018 and winning the League Cup, Europa League and Community Shield during his time in charge.

Now in charge of Benfica, the 62-year-old was asked about Amorim’s dismissal and left the analysis to his compatriot.

‘What happened with Ruben is something that only Ruben can analyse,’ Mourinho told O Jogo. ‘I believe he will do it, he and his staff. Whether he will do it with you and make his view public, that I do not know.’

Mourinho clearly does not think Amorim should speak out about his departure, as he says he would not in the same situation, but reassures him that new opportunities will arise.

‘My career at Manchester United , I know it well. I also know the reason why I ended up leaving,” Mourinho said,’ said the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss.

‘But as I always do, or try to do, when I leave a club I close the door and then I do not make comments. I do not analyse externally what happened.

‘A door closes and another one will open. That is what happened when I left. The history stayed there, the numbers stayed there, the three medals came home and that is it.’

Mourinho dismissed the idea that Amorim’s dismal time at United will make things more difficult for young Portuguese coaches, saying: ‘I do not understand why it would, but each coach will answer for himself. For me, no, I do not feel it that way.’

Amorim is yet to comment since leaving the club, but Carlos Fernandes, who was his assistant at Old Trafford has posted on social media.

Captioning a number of photos of his time working with the Red Devils, Fernandes wrote on Instagram: ‘Thank you, Manchester United.

‘Thank you to the world-class players I had the privilege to coach and to learn from.
