FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Argentina over final brawl and Falklands banner

The FIFA has announced the opening of disciplinary proceedings following the incidents that occurred after the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The names involved in this process are Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and Roberto Ayala (Argentina), and Pablo Martín Páez Gavira "Gavi" (Spain).
The FIFA statement:
"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has adopted the following measures in relation to the incidents that occurred during the FIFA World Cup 2026™:
Argentine Football Association
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has initiated proceedings against the Argentine Football Association for possible breaches of article 13, paragraph 2, letter c) (using a sporting event to make statements of a non-sporting nature), article 14, paragraph 5 (improper conduct), article 15 (Discrimination and racist abuse) and article 17 (Order and security at matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, in light of the discriminatory chants and gestures, delays in the start of matches, failure to comply with match and security protocols, the display of inappropriate messages by the team and spectators, and the throwing of objects by spectators at several matches of the Argentine national team in the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has received the report from the appointed prosecutor in disciplinary and ethics cases regarding the incidents that occurred during the FIFA World Cup 2026™ final (Spain vs. Argentina) and, following the recommendation contained therein, has initiated disciplinary proceedings—for possible breaches of article 14, paragraph 1, letter i), of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (assault)—against Argentine players Nahuel Molina (two charges, one completed and one attempted) and Leandro Paredes (three charges), as well as against Argentine coaching staff member Roberto Ayala (one charge). Likewise, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated—for possible breaches of article 14, paragraph 1, letter b), of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (unsporting conduct)—against Argentine players Nahuel Molina (one charge) and Thiago Almada (one charge), as well as against Spanish player Pablo Martín Páez Gavira "Gavi" (one charge).
In accordance with the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the accused have been given the opportunity to present their position, after which the FIFA Disciplinary Committee will issue a decision at a later date".
It is therefore too early to know what the different names involved in this procedure are facing, as they will first have to present their position before FIFA's Disciplinary Committee. What is clear is that Gavi is charged with unsporting conduct, different from the charges received by Nahuel Molina, Paredes or Ayala, who are facing assault charges.
