Could Newcastle get dragged into relegation fight after Eddie Howe’s shock departure?

Newcastle United supporters are left reeling after the shock resignation of manager Eddie Howe.

Given his achievements at St James’ Park, Howe’s departure is a huge blow for the Magpies.

The 48-year-old twice led them into the Champions League and ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought by winning the 2025 League Cup.

Al Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle is poised to replace Howe. He has built a reputation as a forward-thinking and dynamic manager who favours an attack-minded, high-intensity playing style.

But Jaissle hasn’t managed a top European club and his task at Newcastle will not be easy.

The German boss will not have the services of star duo Anthony Gordon or Sandro Tonali.

Gordon left to join Barcelona in a £70 million deal, while Tonali was snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur for £100m.

Not only that, captain Bruno Guimaraes is nearing an exit, with Arsenal in advanced talks to finalise a move for the Brazilian.

Lewis Hall could also push for a transfer with Manchester United keen on him.

Newcastle had all their big stars last season but still endured a disappointing campaign, finishing 12th in the Premier League.

With Howe leaving and the squad devoid of some of their key players, a relegation battle is a possibility for the Tyneside club.

However, they still boast quality in their ranks and are expected to make a few more top-class additions before the end of the transfer window.

A little wobble early in the season is expected but it would be a big shock if they go down to the Championship.

But then again, who could have predicted West Ham United would get relegated last season considering their squad quality.

Tottenham also surprised us all by sinking as low as they could without actually suffering the drop.

Sunderland were tipped for relegation on their Premier League return, but they ended up securing a Europa League berth.
