Ruben Amorim has been sacked, and Manchester United are back in the market for a new manager . Just hours after stating that he will not walk away from his role, Amorim has been handed his marching orders .

Following the draw with Leeds United , it was clear that relationships were frosty behind the scenes at Old Trafford. The Portuguese boss declared he arrived at the club wanting to manage and not simply coach .

"I came here to be the manager of Manchester United , not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear," Amorim told reporters. "I know that my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel, it's not [Antonio] Conte, it's not [Jose] Mourinho, but I'm the manager of Manchester United.

And it's going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change. I'm not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me."

That moment may have arrived quicker than Amorim expected. Mirror Football takes a look at who United could hire next.

The former Manchester United midfielder will be in charge against Burnley , stepping up from his role with the club's academy. It's not impossible to think that Fletcher could take on the job until the end of the season if he does well.

Another former Manchester United midfielder, and crucially, he is available. The 44-year-old departed Middlesbrough last year and has since been working with UEFA, but perhaps could provide a fast option to lead the club on a temporary basis.

Carrick has filled in as caretaker manager before, has a stature that demands respect, and knows the club better than most.

The former England boss' name is bound to crop up with United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe being a fan. Sporting director Jason Wilcox is also said to respect the work of Southgate, but United did go in another direction in appointing Amorim in the first place.

Southgate, of course, is currently available but has not managed in club football for more than 16 years.

Perhaps an unlikely option given his connection to Manchester City , but a newly available figure who has previously coached rather than managed. The Italian is said to have been discontent with the control exerted over him at Stamford Bridge before his exit, so the details would have to be fine-tuned, however.

The Bournemouth coach is only under contract until the summer and has completed an impressive job on the south coast. Iraola has dealt with a squad that has seen plenty of change occur outside of his control and still ensured the Cherries remain competitive.

Another coach whose contract is dwindling. Glasner guided Crystal Palace to their first trophy last term, but ultimately ended up frustrated with their efforts in the transfer market.

The Austrian, like Iraola, could provide a solid option with Premier League experience if United can hang on until the end of the season to make their move.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
